State of Play: Seattle-King County is the result of an eight-month of comprehensive research study led by the UW Center for Leadership in Athletics and involving more than 1,600 parents, K-12 students, and coaches through surveys, interviews, and focus groups.
On the whole, the study concluded that most youth in King County are not active enough. Only 22% of boys and 16% of girls meet the CDC’s recommendation of 60 minutes of physical activity daily. Nationally, 35% of boys and 18% of girls meet this recommendation.
Youth who do meet the CDC’s recommendations spend less screen time and have better mental health. And while screen time may play some role in declining rates of physical activity, many other barriers are keeping youth from being physically active.
The King County Play Equity Coalition, launched by King County and the UW Center for Leadership in Athletics, is a partnership of community-based organizations (including Upower), school districts, local governments, and professional sports teams whose collective goal is to implement the recommendations of the State of Play: Seattle-King County study.
