YES Initiative Wins Federal Grant

A result of a collaboration formed via the King County Play Equity Coalition, Upower, Seattle Children’s Research Institute, UW Center for Leadership in Athletics, and Highline Public Schools have collectively won a federal grant for their Youth Engagement in Sports (YES) Initiative – a plan created to improve adolescent physical activity and nutrition.

YES is part of the National Sports Strategy, a new resource for youth sports policymakers that aims to provide ALL young people access to play sports.

YES supports the Department of Health and Human Services Physical Activity Guidelines and the CDC’s recommendation of 60 minutes of physical activity daily for youth nationwide.

YES also focuses on improving physical activity and nutrition behaviors among minority and socio-economically disadvantaged youth.

This grant will enable Upower, Seattle Children’s Research Institute, UW Center for Leadership in Athletics, and Highline Public Schools to deliver high-quality, developmentally-appropriate programming that supports physical activity, sports participation, healthy nutrition, and social-emotional skill development among middle school students Highline school district.
