Upower has proudly partnered with CHOICE Academy for the past eight years, bringing movement, fun, and inspiration to its students and staff. Cherie Clymer, a dedicated teacher at CHOICE, shared her heartfelt reflections on the profound impact this partnership has had on her classroom and beyond. Originally a math and biology teacher, Cherie was asked to take on the role of teaching physical education because it was the closest subject to her expertise. She rose to the challenge with enthusiasm and creativity, but having Upower in her classroom has been a game-changer, “Allowing Upower to be here gives me more time to prepare lessons or give attention to students who need extra support,” she shared. The partnership has allowed her to balance her teaching responsibilities while ensuring her students receive the high-quality physical education they deserve.
Cherie warmly described Upower sessions as a time of laughter and connection, with games like the cone game (Ice Cream Cones or Volcanoes) standing out as a favorite. “It’s great for engaging reluctant students,” she explained. “By the end, we’re all laughing, and everyone is ready to try something more rigorous.” This lighthearted approach has become a hallmark of Upower’s presence, helping students and staff alike step out of their comfort zones to embrace physical activity with joy.
When asked about her favorite coach, Cherie couldn’t choose just one, saying, “You’re all my favorites! Thank you for sharing your lives, time, expertise, love for young people, and joy in physical activity with me.” She highlighted how Upower coaches bring out the best in everyone by listening deeply and creating a supportive environment. “They change the dynamic in the classroom from one adult managing 30 energetic young people to three adults listening, caring, and helping students. That ratio change is invaluable—thank you!”
Beyond the fun and games, Upower has also been Cherie’s source of learning and professional growth. “Much of what I’ve learned about trauma-informed teaching practices has come from watching Upower coaches in action,” she shared. “Their ability to meet students where they are—while encouraging growth—has left a lasting impression. Teenagers can be self-conscious about their bodies or skills, but Upower coaches always invite participation at each student’s level. They make space for every need without excusing anyone from the hard work of training.”
Cherie’s appreciation extended beyond the classroom. She shared how Upower has consistently provided support, from donating culturally respectful athletic gear to offering summer camps and internships. “They’ve given my students opportunities they would never receive in regular p.e. classes,” she reflected. The coaches’ encouragement has also uplifted her during challenging moments. “Their unconditional positive regard extends to me, offering hope and encouragement when I feel discouraged by the lack of resources like a gym or track.”
After eight wonderful years, the partnership between Upower and CHOICE Academy continues to thrive, rooted in shared values of inclusion, resilience, and joy. Cherie summed it up beautifully: “Upower coaches build community and help us all—students and staff alike—push ourselves while having fun. Thank you for being part of our lives.”
